Mechanisms and consequences of cellular cholesterol exchange and transfer

Unesterified (free) cholesterol is essential for cell viability with a critical function being the
maintenance of appropriate membrane structure (for reviews, see Refs. 1-3). Cells can
utilize either endogenous or exogenous sources of cholesterol. Synthesis de novo or
mobilization of cholesteryl ester storage pools can provide the endogenous cholesterol
while exogenous cholesterol comes from circulating lipoproteins.
