Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is an intestinally derived insulinotropic hormone that is
currently under investigation for use in the treatment of diabetes mellitus. To investigate the
Ca 2+ signaling pathways by which GLP-1 may stimulate the secretion of insulin from
pancreatic β-cells, we examined its effects on the concentration of free intracellular Ca
2+([Ca 2+] i) while simultaneously determining what action it exerts on ion channel function.
