This review deals with four aspects of the systemic arterial baroreceptor reflexes. 1) The
main intention was to describe the baroreceptor control of effector organs and compare the
results derived from experiments in the anesthetized with those obtained in the
unanesthetized animal. 2) There is a short description of the electrical activity of
baroreceptor afferents. 3) Since the anatomy, histology, and mechanical behavior of the
receptor-carrying blood vessel segments are an integral part of this control system, they …
This review deals with four aspects of the systemic arterial baroreceptor reflexes. 1) The main intention was to describe the baroreceptor control of effector organs and compare the results derived from experiments in the anesthetized with those obtained in the unanesthetized animal. 2) There is a short description of the electrical activity of baroreceptor afferents. 3) Since the anatomy, histology, and mechanical behavior of the receptor-carrying blood vessel segments are an integral part of this control system, they were to some extent also considered. 4) In order to give possible explanations of differences in the effector responses of the anesthetized and the conscious animal, certain aspects of the central control of the baroreceptor reflexes have also been included.
